Melamine

Last Saturday my friend Molly and I volunteered to sort through donations for a non-profit group that has been overwhelmed with donations this Summer. They have over three rooms stacked floor to ceiling with boxes of items that need sorting & selling. We came in one morning to try and tackle just one small section of donations for them since they just don’t have the man power to go through things and actually had started hauling over sections of the donations to the dump (we totally broke our hearts!)
Sorting sounded like loads of fun to us, and the manager said anything we found that we wanted to buy we could set aside and purchase before we left.
I found these melamine dishes that were in terrible shape. They were all badly stained, had scratches, and some even looked like they had remnants of food. I liked the colors and shape of the bowls so I figured I’d just try and clean them. Before we left one of the ladies mentioned that her Mom always cleaned up stained melamine with bleach, so I thought I’d give it a try.
A quick soak in a water/bleach bath made these beauties look like new. I couldn’t believe it! I wish I had taken more before photos…but here is one to give you an idea how rough they looked.
