So she and her mother hid her darlings away in an unused attic.
Just for a little while.
But the brutal days swelled into agonizing years. Now Cathy, Chris, and the twins wait in their cramped and helpless world, stirred by adult dreams, adult desires, served a meager sustenance by an angry, superstitious grandmother who knows that the Devil works in dark and devious ways. Sometimes he sends children to do his work–children who–one by one–must be destroyed….
Totally disturbing book with whippings & incest, yet totally engrossing to teenage me.
Recently I saw the film was on Netflix and I told Tom that we just had to watch it, and he was game. It was still just as good as I remember, but I kept mixing up stuff from the book which was left out of that first film. Yep, “first” film. A few days after we watched it I happened to see on Facebook that there is a new remake coming out. A made for tv Lifetime movie this January, and I can’t wait! It is rumored to stay very true to the book, so I am excited to see what they do with it.
Of course my first thought was it would be awesome to have a themed viewing party (this is just where my mind goes) so I made a little pin-board with some ideas.
-If you have a bar cart, the food can be wheeled into the room under domed dishes.
-People could come dressed as their favorite or most hated character. Maybe Cathy in a sad pair of ballet flats, very pale makeup. Maybe The Grandmother with her stern black dress.
-The decorations would need to be simple construction paper flowers like the twins make in the attic.
-Stop in used bookshops and pick up a few copies of the book, decoration and then gifts or prizes, maybe some Dollanganger trivia!
-You could also lay some fake mice around (Cory’s pet mouse…Fred, or Mickey again depending on film vs novel) Or make some candy shaped like mice to add to the food.
The movie premieres January 18th on Lifetime, so there is plenty of time for planning. ;)
