acorns!
Friday October 30th 2009, 10:54 am

Yesterday Tom and I went for a few walks at all the different parks in our area. We were looking for acorns and it was harder then I realized it would be. By now most of the acorns have either been eaten or hidden away by the squirrels.

Still we managed to find enough for the projects I will be doing with the first grade class this afternoon. The acorn caps were actually really easy to find. Today is the Fall Party and we will be making little felt ball acorns by gluing the felt balls into the acorn caps. I’ve got a lot of the caps and balls so each kid can make several. I really wanted the kids to make the felt balls since I think that is one of the most fun parts of the whole project, but when I found out how long we have for the party, there just isn’t enough time.

Then this morning Tom drilled holes into all the acorns + chestnuts we collected yesterday, and those will be made into necklaces with wood beads.

I also sewed some fall leaf beanbags for the game. We did a similar game last year for the Winter party with snowball beanbags and kids this age just seem to love tossing beanbags around.

oh, that makes me feel better for neglecting my house last month and collecting acorn caps like crazy. I tried to justify it by walking a mile or so first, lol. Last year I forgot and had to go dig them up out of the snow in december. That was no fun!
I still want burr oak acorns…there just aren’t any burr oaks around here.

I am room mother this year for the first grade…our party went really smoothly last week, and I hope yours does, too! Bean bag games are always a big hit around here.
