So I go out yesterday thinking I am going to spend about $100 or so on a no-nonsense sewing machine. I know I don’t “need” the bells + whistles, and as long as it can sew through about three layers of fabric, straight stitch, I’m good to go (afterall I have the industrial for when things get a little too thick, right?) Well I go out and I look at the little selection of sewing machines at Target and I think “well hmm, maybe I should just go ahead spend $300 and get this lower-end Europro slightly computerized sewing machine. “heck!” I think “I use this tool almost every single day, might as well go a little fancy, right??”
Tom of course had wandered off to the toy aisle to leave me to ponder and rationalize all alone. Don’t you know I come walking out of the aisle with the Europro sewing machine. When I first got it home I was excited to see that with a push of a button I could have it sew out words for me. Of course how often am I going to use that feature except maybe to type out phrases to tuck into toms shoes..or maybe sew into his sweatshirt when he’s not looking. Then I also noticed it has a no-pedal option! How can this be? I can’t even imagine trying to sew by pushing a start button, then using the same button to stop…weird, just really weird. My foot would be moving on its own out of habit. So my point is, the machine is fine + dandy…but I hate the reverse button, its a tiny button in the middle of a bunch of other buttons. When you push it, it sews so slowly back up no matter what you have the sewing speed set on, and no matter how hard you push the pedal. The other thing I don’t care for is the beeping everytime you do something it does not agree with (granted I could turn this off)
I am though debating about taking it back and exchanging it for a good old fashion machine where I can back stitch as fast as I can, and be able to easily push the back stitch button because it is not small + hidden among other buttons (that really bothers me) Then again—-it means no more printing out things like “i like poop”…..its a hard choice I tell ya!

In shop news this slightly larger sized tree stump is going to be added to the shop soon! There is someone that saw it at Renegade that may be buying it first, but if not it (and two others) will be added to the shop. I am also finishing up bananas, smores, and will have more donut kaychains very soon! Look for a big shop update hopefully by Friday.
Was that someone me?? Because dang I want that thing.

Comment by stevie 10.04.06 @ 1:06 pmI have this same sewing machine and that back button annoys me too! (and the beeping) But I love the computerized option (i am a computer nerd) and I think I want to save my $ for a fancier one. :)
Comment by natalie 10.04.06 @ 1:19 pmThanks for the picture of tree stump + friends.
I’m changing my comment name… Danielle is boring.

I like poop! LOL! Messages in shoes and on sweatshirts sounds like fun :D
Comment by Lilie 10.04.06 @ 2:06 pmcan you tell me how big the font gets on that sewing machine, like how big it willw rite? perhaps i could make my zombie shirts without silk screening! i would learn to sew if i didn’t have to silk screen ever again!
Comment by tinaseamonster 10.04.06 @ 3:00 pmhee hee.. i like poop too. :) You get your sewing machines at target? and you’re that good? that’s incredible!
Comment by Sam 10.04.06 @ 6:33 pmI have the “no bells and whistles” Europro machine from Target and I am very happy with it, should you decide to take “fancy word writing machine” back
Comment by persephone 10.05.06 @ 7:37 amHmm, I really like that word-spelling function! I have a couple of old clunkers I inherited that don’t do anything fancy. I have heard lots of good stuff about the Berninas from the quilt people I know, though, and I know they sometimes upgrade and you can get their used machines, either through the sewing machine shop or directly from a quilt lady…might see if you have a local quilt guild that has a newsletter or website or something.
Comment by kate 10.05.06 @ 10:42 amThe sewing machine thing is a biggie question. A couple of years ago I got a BabyLock Crafter and it works for me. But, just for fun go to a dealer and sew on the machines to see if you like any of them. Living in a small house, without an extra room to work in, a computer type sewing machine is better because it is quieter (so you can sew later even with the beep). Most heavy sewers I talked to tend to us the Bernina (my sister in law being one of those). But, I think the only way you can get the fast speed sewing both ways is without a computerize machine.
