Sure it might be 28 degrees outside, and a cold wind might be freezing me to the bone, but Spring is on the horizon! I just need to get through the next few weeks and then I am ready to welcome the warmth. I decided I needed a new wreath or two for Spring, and maybe a way to use up a little of that massive pile of Astroturf.
I picked up two very cheap hay wreaths while I was out today. (I always see one of two of these at Goodwill, so check resale shops) I cut the Astroturf into long strips and hot glued the end to the back side of the hay wreath and then tightly wrapped the whole wreath in the turf. I made sure to glue down the final end, and add some heavy duty staples for extra measure.

I glued on a bunch of cotton spun mushrooms for one, and amazing plastic daisies for the other. Seriously, if all faux flowers looked this way I would fill my house…come on, plastic daisies with polka dot fabric for centers, so good! I saved one of the yellow daisies to turn into a broach for myself, too cute to resist. (This wreath was still drying so I didn’t get to take a hanging photo yet).

A few notes of caution, the Astroturf falls apart pretty easily and makes a really big mess! I wouldn’t want to do this outside because it would blow off and probably not be so good for wildlife, so just make sure you cut the turf in a clear place and vacuum afterwards. You might want to wear a mask too so you don’t breathe in any of the little bits. Once my wreaths were wrapped I sprayed a few coats of a clear matte finishing spray to keep the astroturf from fraying and flaking to bits while it is hanging outside. I figure if I get sick of the wreaths I can careful remove all the little goodies, unwrap them and try again.
